The Board of Trustees considers the interscholastic program an integral component of the district educational program. The interscholastic athletic program shall be geared to the interests and abilities of students of both sexes and varied in scope to ensure wide participation consistent with the financial and personnel constraints of the district. In accordance with law, the district shall provide equivalent opportunities to both sexes and shall maintain control over all aspects of the program.

The Board shall not approve membership of the district, or any school in the district, in any voluntary interscholastic athletic organization which discriminates against or denies the benefits of any program to any person on the basis of race, sex, or ethnic origin.

The Superintendent or designee shall be responsible to the Board for district compliance with federal and state law and CIF regulations.

In accordance with Board Policy/Administrative Regulation 6145, participation in the district interscholastic program shall be made available to those students who meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrate successful progress towards meeting graduation requirements.

The Board recognizes its responsibility to ensure that the health and welfare of students is given the highest consideration in planning a program of interscholastic competition. Accordingly, the district interscholastic program shall require medical examinations, ongoing medical supervision, and the use of protective equipment to minimize injuries. Universal precautions shall be observed when injuries occur and when handling bloody dressings, mouth guards, and other articles containing body fluids.

(cf. 5141.3 - Health Examinations)

Special care shall be taken to ensure that all interscholastic training and competition is organized and supervised in a manner which will not overtax the physical capabilities of the participants.

(cf. 6164.11 - Anabolic Steroids)

All athletic teams shall be supervised by qualified coaching personnel.

(cf. 4127 - Noncertificated Coaches)

All athletic events shall be officiated by qualified and licensed personnel.

California Interscholastic Federation

In accordance with this policy, the Board maintains membership in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and requires that all interscholastic athletic activities involving the district be conducted according to CIF rules, regulations, and policies, except as the Board may direct otherwise.

The Board recognizes the importance of selecting CIF representatives who best reflect the needs and concerns of the district. CIF representatives shall report periodically to the Board to ensure that the goals and aims of the district are accurately represented.
