Transportation For School-Related Trips

The District may provide transportation for students, instructors and other individuals for field trips and excursions approved according to Board of Trustees policy and administrative regulations.

The Superintendent or designee shall determine the most appropriate and cost-effective mode of transportation for each approved trip.

When district transportation is provided, students may be released from using district transportation only with the advance written permission of their parent/guardian.

School-related organizations requesting transportation shall be fully responsible for the costs of their trips unless funding has been approved by the Board.

The Superintendent or designee shall ensure that The District has sufficient liability insurance when field trips or excursions involve either transportation by district vehicles or travel to and from a foreign country. When a trip to a foreign country is authorized, liability insurance shall be secured from a carrier licensed to transact insurance business in that country. (Education Code 35330)

Transportation by Private Vehicle

Before transporting students on any field trip or activity drivers shall register with the District. Drivers shall receive safety and emergency instructions which shall be kept in their car. All student passengers shall provide permission slips signed by their parents/guardians authorizing private vehicle transportation. Drivers shall be twenty-one (21) years of age or older.

Drivers shall be required to possess a valid California driver's license and liability insurance of at least $100,000 per occurrence.

Owners, drivers and passengers shall be informed that the registered owner and his/her insurance company are responsible for any accidents which may occur. District personnel who frequently transport students in their private vehicles are urged to carry liability insurance of $300,000 or more per occurrence.

All drivers and passengers shall wear seat belts in accordance with the law. (Vehicle Code 27315)

The number of passengers, including the driver, shall not exceed the number of permanently attached seats and seta belts. The number of passengers in any one vehicle shall not be more than ten (10) persons including the driver. (Education Code 39830) All passengers must travel in the passenger compartment. No passengers may travel in the beds of trucks or pickups.

Driver hours shall not drive after a sixteen hour work period has elapsed or drive more than 8 consecutive hours in a sixteen hour work period.

Principals at each school site shall be responsible for acquainting staff members with this policy.
