The administration of the guidance and counseling program within the school shall be the responsibility of the principal. The Superintendent, or his/her designee shall be responsible for the overall district program.

The persons working in the area of guidance shall be responsible to the principal of the school.

Definitions of Guidance and Counseling

Guidance includes instruction, counseling, evaluation, and support procedures based on youth career planning and development needs. "Guidance" signifies the total content and personal problem-solving process of programs aimed at helping students develop and protect their individuality and potential. This process aims at helping "each student be a problem solver" (planner decision maker, implementer) in each career area. On the other hand, "counseling" is an interpersonal procedure providing one alternative for helping youth achieve guidance related objectives. Here, counseling personnel (i.e., counselors, teachers, para-professionals, school psychologist, etc.) interact with students individually or in groups in order to facilitate youth career planning and development.

Guidance will include the monitoring of student progress in the course work of the student's education program. It will provide for communication with student's teachers and parents regarding their progress.

The goals of the career guidance component of the district Career Education Program for grades seven (7) through twelve (12) are:

1. To provide activities, exercises, and services which will increase the level of self-awareness of each student, such that the student will have adequate personal information to make good career decisions and set realistic goals.

2. To provide activities, exercises, and services which will increase the level of job awareness of each student, such that the student will have sufficient knowledge of the world of work to make good career decisions and set realistic goals.

3. Through counseling, advising, and guidance, to ensure that students have adequate knowledge of resources available to them to pursue and secure employment skills.

4. Through counseling and guidance, to ensure that students are sufficiently introduced to the decision making process, and the process of goal formulation, such that they may begin to plan for the future.

5. To provide programs of general orientation and information to parents in grades 7 through 12.

6. To communicate with parents regarding student progress and total performance in a departmentalized setting.

The following outline is primarily an example of the sequential services to be provided at the secondary schools to meet the above objectives.

Grade Seven

1. Orientation.

All students will be made aware of rights and responsibilities as students.

2. Career opportunities in immediate locale

Students will be made aware of various careers.

3. Relating interests and abilities to careers

a. Students will be advised of relationships between school subjects, their abilities and interests and careers.

b. Educational planning as part of career awareness.

4. Self Awareness

a. Awareness of values.

b. Understanding own strengths and weakness.

5. Decision Making

a. Awareness of decision making process.

b. Goals in decision making.

c. Applying the decision making process.

Grade Eight

1. Orientation.

Students will take an interest inventory.

2. Investigation of career opportunities.

3. Relating interests 'indicated in inventory to career clusters.

4. Educational planning as part of career awareness.

a. Understand high school options and goals.

b. Relating high school subjects to career goals.

5. Overview of career clusters.

a. Exposure to overview.

b. Exploration of one or more areas.

6. Self awareness.

a. Values clarification.

b. Individual strengths and weakness in school subjects as related to career choices.

c. Self assessment.

Knowledge of employability skills.

7. Decision making.

a. Apply decision making skills to career and leisure time activities.

b. Apply decision making skills in future planning.

Grade Nine
