Head Lice

School nurses are responsible for implementing the procedures and recommendations of the county and state health departments relative to pediculosis control. The responsibilities are:

1. Provide staff and parents/guardians with information that will help them to recognize infestation.

2. Instruct staff and parents/guardians how to inspect heads for evidence of infestation.

3. Instruct staff and parents/guardians in methods of treatment and control of infestation.

4. Determine the need for classroom inspection.

School employees shall report all suspected cases of head lice to the principal and school nurse as soon as possible. The student shall be examined by the nurse or designee and excluded if live lice are found. Parents shall be properly notified and informed about treatment. Excluded students may return when reexamination by nurse or designee shows that all pests have been removed within 48 hours.
