Naming Of Facility

arrow Previous bar Next arrow

It shall be the policy of the Board of Trustees to determine the name of a school, or of a room, athletic field, building, or facility within a school campus. No District facilities shall be named by any other person or organization except the Board of Trustees.

Requests for consideration of naming of such District facilities may be initiated by Board Members, school personnel, Parent-Teacher Associations, school-related organizations, groups of interested citizens, or organizations within the District. Such requests shall be made in writing to the Superintendent and shall contain reasons for the request, the background of the individual or group for whom a facility would be named, and the individual or group's contribution to the Lawndale Elementary School District and/or the Lawndale community.

The Board considers the naming of District facilities to be of paramount importance. The naming of a District facility is only done following deliberation, forethought, and discussion as to the significance of the naming. The Board may, at its sole discretion, direct the Superintendent to appoint a citizen's advisory committee to review name suggestions and submit recommendations to the Superintendent for the Board's consideration and adoption. The Superintendent shall maintain procedures for the creation of such ad hoc committees.

Any request to name a facility shall be presented to the Board of Trustees at a regular meeting of the Board for discussion and consideration. Requests to name a facility after a deceased individual shall not be acted upon by the Board of Trustees until at least one year after the death of the individual.

Upon receipt of any request to name a facility, the Board shall take the request under consideration for at least 60 calendar days before making a final decision. Such requests must be considered by the Board of Trustees during at least two different meetings of the Board and must be approved by a supermajority vote of 4 members or more. During the 60 days, the Board may request the Superintendent to determine the cost of implementation should the request be granted.

The Board shall name District facilities in recognition of:

1. Individuals, living or deceased, who have made contributions of local, regional, state, national, or worldwide significance

2. Citizens who have either served in distinguished voluntary service on the Board, or who, in other voluntary capacities have rendered distinguished service to the schools and to the youth of the Lawndale community

3. District staff members who have rendered extraordinary levels of distinguished service to Lawndale schools

4. The geographic area (street, neighborhood, city, etc.) in which a facility is located

No District facility shall be named after an individual who is a current employee or seated Member of the Board of the District, unless such facility was named prior to the effective date of this policy.

Under certain circumstances, the Board may determine to add a name to a named facility or program. Proposals to add a name to a named facility or program shall be submitted and processed in the same manner as noted above for the naming of facilities.

New signage naming a facility or program shall comply with the District standard. The cost for signage may be borne by the District or by the individual or entity making the request for naming, at the discretion of the Board.

Renaming of District Facilities

It is understood that, as the years pass, the facts, conditions, and reasons behind the naming of a District facility might not be well known to future Board Members or persons who might have an interest in the renaming of the District facility. A District facility named by the Board for an individual shall not be renamed by a future Board of Trustees, unless such renaming is affirmed by unanimous consent of the Board.

Facilities named after local individuals who are or have been members of the Lawndale Elementary School District and/or community shall not be renamed. All other facilities may be considered for renaming by the Board.

Memorials

Upon written request, the Board shall consider naming buildings, parts of buildings or athletic fields in honor of the contributions of students, staff members, and community members who have been deceased for at least one year. The Board, at its discretion, may direct the Superintendent to form an ad hoc committee to receive and make recommendations for any such memorials.
