Tutoring

arrow Previous bar Next arrow

The Governing Board expects teachers and other members of the instructional staff to make every effort to resolve students' learning problems at school before recommending that parents/guardians engage a tutor or other professional help. By maintaining a competent, dedicated staff and adequate instructional resources, the Board seeks to minimize the need for individual tutoring.

To preclude conflicts of interest, teachers may not accept any kind of remuneration for tutoring a student enrolled in any of their classes. Teachers who tutor other students must perform this service outside of school facilities and make their own arrangements with parents/guardians for the fees to be charged. The Board encourages teachers to tutor only in subjects or grade levels for which they are certificated.

Also to preclude conflicts of interest, any person employed by Manhattan Beach Unified School District (MBUSD) as a coach may not accept any kind of remuneration, other than the MBUSD coaching stipend, for coaching a student on his/her team during the competition season. Except for approved School Connected Organization remuneration, Coaches who assign a grade for a student may not accept any kind of remuneration, other than the MBUSD coaching stipend, for coaching a student on his/her team during that school year (excluding the summer). This prohibition includes, but is not necessarily limited to, coaching such students privately or as a part of a non-MBUSD organization or club. Coaches also must comply with other applicable MBUSD Board Policies and Administrative Regulations, including, but not limited to, Board Policies/Administrative Regulations 4127 and 4136.

MBUSD coaches who are also employed by a non-MBUSD organization or club team must make it clear that student participation on that club team is completely voluntary.

Employees may not solicit or advertise their fee-based tutoring or coaching at any school facility or in any school publications except for those methods available to any tutor or coach in the community.
