Elementary School Promotion/Standards Of Proficiency

In order to recognize successful completion of elementary and middle school education, the Governing Board shall confer diplomas of graduation from elementary and middle schools and from special day and evening classes of elementary and middle grades.

According to State mandates for Program Improvement Schools, the following criteria has been established:

• Students in 7th and 8th grade who score at "Below Basic" on the California Standards Test for English/Language Arts will be required to take a 2-hour course in Reading Intervention, with no core Language Arts class.

• Students in 7th and 8th grade who score at "Far Below Basic" on the California Standards Test for English/Language Arts will be required to take a 2-hour course in Reading Intervention, with no core Language Arts class.

• Students in 7th and 8th grade who score either at "Far Below Basic" or "Below Basic" on the California Standards Test for Math are required to take the Math Support course (if they have not passed Algebra I.)

Diplomas shall be awarded only to students who have completed the course of study prescribed by law and the district. (Education Code 51402)

In addition, students shall meet district requirements for promotion based on grades, assessments or other indicators as specified in Board policy and administrative regulation.
