High School Graduation Requirements

Because graduation from high school provides students with opportunities for postsecondary education and/or employment, the Board of Education desires to prepare each student to obtain a diploma of high school graduation.

Course Requirements

To obtain a diploma of graduation from high school, students shall complete at least the following courses/credits in grades 9 through 12.

One of the two math courses or a

meet or exceed the content standards for

Algebra 1. A student who has completed

Algebra in the 7th or 8th grade shall be

considered to have met the Algebra requirement.

SCIENCE 20 20 20

(Including biological and physical sciences)

*PHYSICAL EDUCATION 20 20 20

(A maximum of 10 of these credits may be

earned in external PE programs, i.e., activities

conducted outside the hours of the regular school day.)

*A student enrolled at Del Amigo who has

completed the 10th grade or is 16 years of age or more

may be exempt from the requirement.

A Unit of Credit will be granted for a minimum of 15 hours of satisfactory participation in the instructional activities of an approved course of study or for evidence of performance judged equivalent to the expected outcome of an approved course of study, provided that such performance is demonstrated within an alternative program which has been approved by the Board.

Special Day Class students who have reached the minimum age of 18 years and have completed differential proficiency requirements as prescribed by their individualized education program shall be eligible to receive a high school diploma from the district provided that the student has completed his/her individualized education program.

Continuation High School students shall be required to complete 210 credits for a continuation high school diploma. All academic requirements must be fulfilled and a minimum of at least 50 elective credits must be completed. Students are required to meet all other graduation requirements of this policy.

Adult Education High School students shall be required to complete 180 credits for an Adult Education high school diploma.

Notifications

Requirements for graduation and specified alternative means for completing the prescribed course of study shall be made available to students, parents/guardians, and the public. (Education Code 51225.3)

In the annual notification sent to parents/guardians pursuant to Education Code 48980, the Superintendent or designee shall include the following: (Education Code 48980)

1. Information about district high school graduation requirements and how each requirement satisfies or does not satisfy the subject matter requirements for admission to the California State University and the University of California

2. A complete list of career technical education courses offered by the district that satisfy the subject matter requirements for admission to the California State University and the University of California, and which of the specific college admission requirements these courses satisfy
