The following definitions are specified in Educational Code 35160.5 for purposes of academic eligibility requirements.

Extracurricular activities are those programs that have all of the following characteristics: (Education Code 351.60.5)

3. Students exercise some degree of freedom in the selection, planning or control of the program.

4. The program includes both preparation for performance and performance before an audience or spectators.

Extracurricular activities are not part of the regular school curriculum, are not graded, do not offer credit and do not take place during classroom time. (Education Code 35160.5)

Cocurricular activities are programs that may be associated with the curriculum in a regular classroom. (Education Code 35160.5)

An activity is not an extracurricular or cocurricular activity if either of the following conditions applies: (Education Code 35160.5)

1. It is a teacher-graded or required program or activity for a course which satisfies the entrance requirements for admission to the California State University or the University of California.

2. It is a program that has as its primary goal the improvement of academic or educational achievement of students.

The principal or assistant principal may grant ineligible students a probationary period of not more than one semester in which the students may participate in extracurricular and cocurricular activities even if they are not achieving satisfactory educational progress. Students granted probationary eligibility must meet the required standards by the end of the probationary period in order to remain eligible for participation.

Education Code 35160.5 requires that the determination of eligibility be based on the previous grading period and specifies that "previous grading period" does not include any grading period when the student was absent for all or a majority of the time due to absences excused for reasons such as serious illness, injury, approved travel, or work. In such cases, the "previous grading period" is the grading period immediately prior to the excluded period(s).

The grade point average used to determine eligibility shall be based on grades of the last previous grading period during which the student attended class at least a majority of the time. (Education Code 35160.5)

If a student receives a "U" grade or two "N's" in citizenship on a monthly grade check, or an "F" or a "U" or two "N's" on the report card, such student shall be ineligible to participate in any extracurricular or cocurricular activities for two weeks. After the two week period, such student will become eligible to participate in any extracurricular or cocurricular activities but be placed on probation.

If in the opinion of the site administrator such student does not show satisfactory improvement in academic performance and citizenship by the end of the next grade check period, such student shall be ruled ineligible to participate in extracurricular or cocurricular activities until in the opinion of the site administrator such student has shown satisfactory improvement in academic performance and citizenship.

A student receiving an expulsion or suspension from the district will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular or cocurricular activities until the student's suspension or expulsion period has terminated.
