Selection Of Valedictorian/Salutatorian

Selection of Valedictorian

The valedictorian of the senior class shall be the student having the highest rank in his/her graduating class including midyear graduates.

1. Selection Process:

a. The valedictorian shall be selected on the basis of 42 completed units.

b. The valedictorian shall be the student who has the highest grade point average (GPA) earned from 42 units based on seven semesters for the courses taken in grades nine through the first semester of grade twelve using a 4.0 scale and a 5.0 scale of honors, advanced placement, and international baccalaureate courses approved annually by the University of California (overall weighted). The GPA will be rounded to the nearest 100th.

c. If a student has completed more than 42 units, he/she may eliminate excess elective courses that are not required for graduation.

d. If a tie exists, the valedictorian shall be the student who has taken the highest number of honors, advanced placement, and international baccalaureate courses in which he/she received a grade of "A".

e. If a tie still exists, the students shall be recognized as co-valedictorians.

2. The Valedictorian:

a. Shall represent the school in the community and the media.

b. Shall receive recognition at the senior awards and the graduation ceremony.

Selection of Salutatorian

The salutatorian of the senior class shall be the student having the second highest rank in his/her graduating class including midyear graduates.

1. Selection Process:

a. The salutatorian shall be selected on the basis of 42 completed units.

b. The salutatorian shall be the student who has the second highest grade point average (GPA) earned from 42 units based on seven semesters for the courses taken in grades nine through the first semester of grade 12 using a 4.0 scale and a 5.0 scale for honors, advanced placement, and international baccalaureate courses (overall weighted). The GPA will be rounded to the nearest hundredth.

c. If a student has completed more than forty-two units, he/she may eliminate excess elective courses that are not required for graduation.

d. If a tie exists, the salutatorian shall be the student who has taken the highest number of honors, advanced placement, and international baccalaureate courses in which he/she received a grade of "A".

e. If a tie still exists, the students shall be recognized as co-salutatorians.

2. The Salutatorian:

a. Shall represent the school in the community and the media.

b. Shall receive recognition at the senior awards and the graduation ceremony.

Notification of Potential Valedictorian/Salutatorian Candidates

The head counselor at each high school will notify the top twenty juniors during the fall of their junior year that they are potential candidates for Valedictorian and Salutatorian. The notification process shall be as follows:

1. The counselor for each junior identified will meet with that student, provide a copy of the administrative regulation governing selection, and answer any questions about the selection process.

2. During the fall of the senior year, the counselor for each of the 20 potential candidates will mail home a letter to the parents/guardians about the selection process and a copy of the procedure. Counselors will meet with each potential candidate to make students aware of his/her status and answer further questions.

3. College courses are not weighted classes.
