The Board of Trustees believes homework is an important part of the instructional program and a valuable tool to support students' efforts to master grade level content standards. Homework is defined as school-related assignments that will enhance, reinforce or enrich concepts taught in the classroom and which will require time and effort outside the regular school day for successful completion.
Elementary (TK-5) Homework Policy
The Board of Trustees recognizes that current research provides evidence that traditional homework assigned in grades TK-5 has no impact on academic gains. Traditional Homework is defined as school-related assignments that continue tasks taught in the classroom and that require time and effort outside the regular school day for successful completion. The Board recognizes that connecting school experience with a child's home experiences is a critical component of the instructional program. Additionally, the Board of Trustees notes that a greater predictor of elementary students academic success is related to the social emotional home-school connection. Based on the research and commitment to developing the whole child, the Board no longer requires the assignment of traditional homework TK-5. The Board recommends alternative activities that are home-related, build students' sense of community and build family learning.
Alternative home-based activities will be designed to serve specific purposes that may include the following:
* Develop enjoyment of reading and learning from reading.
* Promotes a sense of success and accomplishment for a student.
* Routines that train students to develop effective collaboration, problem solving and self-efficacy.
* Enrichment of the learning that occurs in and outside of the classroom.
* Will not be incorporated into students' grades or result in rewards/punitive actions for homework completion.
The Board believes that well-designed alternative homework assignments provide positive parent-child relationships around school and learning, connects home culture to school experiences and builds students' self-efficacy, collaborative and problem solving skills.
Secondary (6-12) Homework Policy
The Board of Trustees recognizes that current research provides evidence that homework assigned in grades 6-12 has an impact on academic gains. The Board of Trustees believes homework is an important part of the instructional program and a valuable tool to support students' efforts to master grade level content standards. Homework is defined as school-related assignments that will enhance, reinforce or enrich concepts taught in the classroom and which will require a reasonable amount of time and effort outside the regular school day for successful completion. Below are guidelines to support the concept of reasonable amount of time for homework:
* A reasonable homework assignment for grades 6 through 8 will be approximately 60 to 90 minutes per evening, or 240 to 360 minutes per week.
* A reasonable homework assignment for grades 9 through 12 will be approximately 70 to 120 minutes per evening, or 280 to 480 minutes per week.
It is expected that Honors/IB/AP students may require a higher level of effort to meet the additional demands of advanced coursework.
Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and College Dual Enrollment courses at the high schools represent college level coursework and may require extended reading assignments and research projects in preparation for external exams during the school year. This preparation may require extended homework time needed for completion of these assignments.
Grades TK-12 Makeup Work
The Superintendent or designee shall notify parents/guardians that no student may have his/her grade reduced or lose academic credit for any excused absence when missed assignments and tests are satisfactorily completed within a reasonable period of time. Such notification shall include the full text of Education Code 48205. (Education Code 48980)
The teacher of any class from which a student is suspended may require the student to complete any assignments and tests missed during the suspension. (Education Code 48913)
